Archive building Arolsen Archives
Our competition entry in collaboration with Gina Barcelona Architects
Shaped by the surrounding trees, the three-storey design for the archive building in Bad Arolsen blends into the urban and natural environment with its memorable building form. The shape is based on a solid and rectangular volume that recedes from the surrounding treetops, leaving them enough space to grow. Prefabricated rammed earth elements and narrow window openings, behind which the archive areas are located, characterize the façade appearance. A transparent first floor provides views into the publicly accessible areas, which can be used for exhibitions and events.
Exposed barrel vaulted ceilings determine the design of the interior. They structure the interior spaces and transfer the curved design language of the building into the interior.
In addition to the building itself, our design also takes the surrounding outdoor areas into account. A new path links the building to existing paths, and new paths and squares are also planned in the existing tree park. The open spaces are complemented by a wild flowering meadow, which provides a valuable habitat for birds and insects.
Overall, our design is an appropriate building block for the location, which blends naturally into the existing surroundings in terms of form and materials and does justice to its purpose as an archive building.
