Appreciation of our work
There are a large number of awards and architecture prizes that are awarded to individual architects or architecture firms.
SHA has also been repeatedly nominated and awarded in the past.
Dortmund Hamm Unna Architecture Prize 2020
The PhoenixWERK office ensemble, planned, realized and since spring 2020 the new company location of SHA Scheffler Helbich Architekten GmbH, has received the coveted “Dortmund Hamm Unna 2020 Architecture Award” together with two other projects. A total of 27 projects from the region took part in the competition and were criticized by the jury.
“We are very proud,” says Christoph Helbich, Managing Partner of SHA. “This is really great confirmation of our work,” adds partner Birgit Helbich. The couple, together with Immira Grundstückverwaltung, are the builders of the first two components.
In the long term, three further buildings will be erected on the site. This will complete the neighborhood in line with demand.
The jury’s assessment of the PhoenixWERK was as follows:
“Existing spatial edges are complemented in a striking urban design. The space created in this way does justice to the new use and allows the history of the area to be recognized. The design language of the industrial architecture is also reflected in the materials and façade. These qualities are continued in the floor plans and the detailing of the interior.”
3rd place at the Image Film Award 2016
Today, both large and small companies, from all industries and all sectors – including SHA – have a corporate film. “Your architects in the building materials trade”, the name of the image film says it all. It shows the expertise and many years of experience SHA has in the building materials trade. Building owners talk about the planning and realization of their projects from their point of view. This makes it clear how important personal contact with customers and their satisfaction are to SHA. At the 3rd REVIER MANAGER IMAGEFILM-AWARD, companies based in the Ruhr region had the opportunity to submit their clips and have them evaluated by a professional jury of experts. The readers of REVIER MANAGER also voted for their favorite. Our film made it to 3rd place. Good to know: The technical implementation and supporting concept were also handled by an office from the Ruhr region, Filmproduktion überRot from Dortmund.
BDA Prize 2010: Haus am See
SHA were awarded first prize by the Association of German Architects (BDA) in 2010 for the “Haus am See” in Dortmund Kirchhörde. In the presence of Lord Mayor Ullrich Sierau, Birgit and Christoph Helbich accepted the award from their colleague Bruno Brandi from Hamburg at Dortmund City Hall.
Explanation of the jury:
“The detached house is located in a typical suburban setting. In the midst of similar residential buildings facing the street and completed with a rear garden, the architect has succeeded in creating a special architectural style. The house and garage form a spatially defined entrance in carefully measured, proportionally related cubatures. The residential building initially appears hermetic: two plastered walls (facing the street and the neighbor) that are only open through narrow bands of windows and a narrow section of wall form the structural framework of the building on a long rectangular floor plan.
In between, however, the wall surface of the house is completely dissolved by means of a steel and glass construction. The almost closed wall surfaces and the relief effect of the deep window reveals and the staccato-like rhythm of the vertical steel elements create a peculiar, somewhat technoid charm.
The building draws a very special advantage from the extensive opening of the rear façade: the large living room, which is skillfully connected to the kitchen around the access core, and the bedrooms on the second floor, which are accessed via a shared corridor, open up to a natural-looking garden with trees and direct access to a small lake. There was no better way to take advantage of this fantastic situation.”
UNIPOR Prize 2009: Haus am See “In harmony with nature”
On the occasion of the “Bau 2009” trade fair held in Munich, SHA was awarded first prize by UNIPOR-Ziegel Marketing GmbH for the “Haus am See” in Dortmund Kirchhörde. Birgit and Christoph Helbich accepted the award on behalf of the office to the applause of the trade fair visitors.
Under the motto “In harmony with nature”, the jury praised the design for “its architectural sophistication” and its environmentally conscious construction method: “The economical use of energy is achieved by architectural means such as compactness, zoning and orientation”, so that elaborate high-tech components could be dispensed with: an architectural solution to ecological issues par excellence.
German Urban Development Award 2018 for “PHOENIX – A new urban landscape”
By the way: The project “PHOENIX – A new urban landscape in Dortmund” by the city of Dortmund was awarded the German Urban Development Prize 2018. It is awarded by the German Academy for Urban and Regional Planning (DASL) and sponsored by the Wüstenrot Foundation and serves to promote a forward-looking planning and urban development culture. The triad of PHOENIX West – Hörde-Zentrum – Phoenix See is considered a successful project of structural change.
SHA is proud to be part of one of the largest recent conversion projects in Dortmund and the state of NRW with the realization of the PhoenixWERK.
