The "Dortmund Hamm Unna 2020 Architecture Prize" has been decided
Award for the PhoenixWERK
Great joy at the old PHOENIX West steelworks site: the PhoenixWERK office ensemble, planned, realized and since spring 2020 the new company location of SHA Scheffler Helbich Architekten GmbH, has received the coveted “Dortmund Hamm Unna 2020 Architecture Award” together with two other projects. A total of 27 projects from the region took part in the competition and were criticized by the jury.
“We are very proud,” says Christoph Helbich, Managing Partner of SHA. “This really is a great endorsement of our work,” adds Birgit Helbich, partner at SHA. The couple, together with Immira Grundstückverwaltung, are the builders of the first two components. In the long term, three more buildings will be constructed on the site, including a parking garage by next spring. This will complete the neighborhood in line with demand.
The jury’s assessment of the PhoenixWERK was as follows:
“Existing spatial edges are complemented in a striking urban design. The space created in this way does justice to the new use and allows the history of the area to be recognized. The design language of the industrial architecture is also reflected in the materials and façade. These qualities are continued in the floor plans and the detailing of the interior.”
Structural change at Phoenixplatz
Christoph Helbich continues: “We wanted to counter the existing historical and partly listed buildings – the blast furnace, the Warsteiner Music Hall and Schalthaus 101 – with a compact development. The result is an urban mix of work, events, gastronomy and local recreation that elevates Phoenixplatz to a lively district center.”
The award is a prize for both architecture and the client and shows that the decision for the location was the right one.
The background: SHA began thinking about a new location back in 2014, as the old architectural office in a former two-family house in Aplerbeck was bursting at the seams despite various temporary solutions. The team identified various attractive locations in Dortmund and developed evaluation criteria for a comparison. In the end, only the PHOENIX West area proved to be predestined; SHA took up the planning and the history of PhoenixWERK took its course.
Jury visit on site
The BDA jury had examined and discussed all 27 applications in advance on the basis of the submitted plans, photos and explanatory texts. The “shortlist” candidates were then closely inspected on site at the end of November in a completely analogous manner and in compliance with all corona rules. Leona Geitner (geitner architekten, Düsseldorf), Thimo Weitemeier (Stadtbaurat Nordhorn), Marc Falke (Goeke Falke Architekten, Münster), Arndt Brüning (Architekten Brüning Rein, Essen) and Prof. Heike Hanada (architect, Berlin/ Professor TU Dortmund) made up the expert jury.
BDA spokesman Marcus Patrias thanks all participants and congratulates the award winners: “My heartfelt congratulations go to all award-winning and recognized colleagues and not least to their clients, who have promoted and supported the pursuit of excellent architecture.”
Exhibition opening in Dortmund
The winner of the “Dortmund Hamm Unna Architecture Prize” is definitely the Dortmund location, as the other awards went to the Baukunstarchiv NRW (Spital-Frenking + Schwarz/ client City of Dortmund) and the Hampton by Hilton Hotel (Schamp & Schmalöer/ client DIAG GmbH & Co KG IV). There were awards for the Fritz-Henßler-Berufskolleg (SSP AG/builder-owner City of Dortmund), Haus 7 in Hörde (Schamp & Schmalöer/builders Anne and Richard Schmalöer) and the new kiosk in Rombergpark (BAUART GmbH/builder-owner Sport & Freizeitbetriebe Botanischer Garten Rombergpark).
The award ceremony and exhibition opening are planned for Thursday, January 7, 2021, at the Baukunstarchiv. All the exhibition boards produced for the various projects would then be on display there. The date is still subject to coronavirus restrictions. In any case, a catalog for the “Dortmund Hamm Unna Architecture Prize 2020” will be published.
