“We are delighted that people in our state finally have the opportunity to experience architecture on site again and exchange ideas with architects in person,” explains Ernst Uhing, President of the NRW Chamber of Architects. The Day of Architecture aims to provide an opportunity to bring experts and interested laypeople into conversation and to bring architecture to the attention of the general public for a weekend. – The Chamber of Architects of North Rhine-Westphalia presents the “Day of Architecture” in a comprehensive catalog, which can be ordered free of charge from the Chamber. The image database is now online at aknw.de.

This is the 27th anniversary of the “Day of Architecture” in NRW. In the pre-corona years, many thousands of architecture fans and people interested in building made their way to the June weekend to find out about design trends and technical developments in building and living and to take the opportunity to exchange ideas with planners. Extensive media coverage ensures that the buildings presented are also noticed by a broad public. The Chamber of Architects of North Rhine-Westphalia therefore regards the Day of Architecture as an important contribution to the building culture discourse in Germany.

Motto of the Day of Architecture 2022: “Architecture builds the future!”

The nationwide motto of the Day of Architecture this year is “Architecture builds the future”. After all, planning and building is always done with responsibility for future generations, explains Chamber President Ernst Uhing. “What we architects create together with our clients today must contain the promise of a better tomorrow.

This applies to aspects of climate justice in the same way as it does to social and building culture issues.”

The fact that our built environment, our neighborhoods and residential buildings offer people protection and a home will be made clearer to us in the first half of 2022 than it has been for a long time.

Trends and topics 2022

The Day of Architecture always reflects social developments. Climate protection remains a fundamental issue, which is reflected in the conversion and continued use of existing buildings and in energy-efficient refurbishment measures, among other things. Numerous examples of this can be viewed on site on the Day of Architecture in NRW. Educational buildings, communal and housing association projects, redensification, accessibility and conversions as well as the sophisticated design of gardens and green zones are some of the specific construction tasks that can be seen in the TdA buildings 2022. For many visitors, the Day of Architecture is therefore an important source of inspiration.

The last two “Days of Architecture” under pandemic conditions have shown that architecture communication is also possible in an exciting way via digital media and in virtual space. The Chamber of Architects of North Rhine-Westphalia has therefore once again invited the participating architecture firms to present their work in digital form – in video clips, virtual tours or podcasts.

Background: “Day of Architecture”

The “Day of Architecture” has firmly established itself nationwide as an architectural event before the start of the summer vacation. Architects, interior designers, landscape architects and urban planners will be on hand to present new or renovated buildings together with their clients, explain the special features of the architecture and answer visitors’ questions.

Buildings in North Rhine-Westphalia that have been realized in our federal state in the past five years will be presented; a period of eight years applies to landscape architecture and urban planning projects. The “Day of Architecture” will take place nationwide on June 25/26, 2022; in North Rhine-Westphalia, it has been brought forward to the penultimate weekend in June due to the early start of the school holidays.
