On Thursday, August 10, Lord Mayor Dr. Stephan Keller and City Director Burkhard Hintzsche laid the foundation stone for two new school buildings with a quadruple sports hall for the Schloss-Gymnasium Benrath and the Realschule Benrath. Lord Mayor Dr. Stephan Keller: “Today’s laying of the foundation stone is an important step for the entire development of the ‘Benrather Rochade’. In addition to the new school buildings with sports complex, we are also creating a senior care home and modern residential units on an area of around 30,000 square meters. The construction project is a showcase project in the south of Düsseldorf, with which we have succeeded in finding a solution for three different locations.”
The new school buildings and sports hall will be erected as three connected structures. The Schloß-Gymnasium Benrath will have a gross floor area of 17,565 square meters, while the Realschule Benrath will have a gross floor area of 16,925 square meters. The four-court sports hall will have a gross floor area of 5,490 square meters and will have intensively greened roof and façade areas.

City Director Burkhard Hintzsche: “The expansion of modern educational landscapes in Düsseldorf is also progressing rapidly in the south of the state capital. We will be able to provide two new buildings for the Schloss-Gymnasium Benrath and the Realschule Benrath in the coming school year. A multifunctional sports hall with innovative usage options rounds off the offer.”

A classroom arrangement in the form of clusters will enable innovative, modern teaching. In addition, extra-curricular areas such as an assembly hall, a canteen and a large break hall will ensure optimal learning and recreational conditions.
The quadruple sports hall will also offer innovative multifunctional uses, such as for table tennis, judo, strength training and gymnastics, as well as for club sports. Completion is planned for the 2024/2025 school year. The work is being carried out by Industrieterrains Düsseldorf-Reisholz AG, or IDR for short.
