Building center Thelen in Simmerath
Two paths lead to the goal
SHA was already responsible for the complete new construction of the traditional, medium-sized family business with DIY store, garden center, administration and exhibition in 2006: As an inviting gesture in the sense of a clear and distinct corporate design with high recognition value, the large canopy welcomes visitors to the building center of the Thelen company in Simmerath. The roof on the large tree supports provides effective weather protection for the main entrance and the glazed main façade. At the same time, it offers space for special offers and promotions and is therefore a harmonious extension of the inner sales area. Visitors can recognize the entrance to the DIY store, the garden center and the building elements exhibition from a distance. The size and expertise within the company are thus reflected externally.
The areas within the structure are designed as large continuous areas with wide-span glulam beams. The DIY store and the display area for building elements can be managed separately, so that the display area can also be used outside of store opening hours with optimized staff deployment.
A good ten years later, Mobau Thelen is thinking bigger: the building materials business was rebuilt and expanded while operations continued. In the first construction phase, the existing loading zone was converted into a warehouse and the outdoor storage area was extended. All storage areas are now logistically optimized. A bakery for customers has also been added.
In the second construction phase, a new builders’ merchant with a consulting counter and administrative offices with a total area of 860 m² was built.
The building center with all conceivable usage units – a specialist wholesaler for building materials, gardening & landscaping, building elements, roofing, facades and tiles/sanitary with an attached DIY store and garden center – appeals to both commercial professional customers and private DIY enthusiasts. Both target groups are served in a needs-oriented manner. This is reflected in the separate routing: two different addresses and two entrances show all customers the right way and lead them quickly to their destination despite the size of the overall area.
