Dortmund’s greenest parking garage opens
KVWL parking garage on Westfalendamm
Handing over the keys to Dortmund’s future greenest multi-storey parking lot: Dr. Volker Schrage, Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Westphalia-Lippe Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians, opened the KVWL’s modern and sustainable employee parking lot on Westfalendamm on Friday, June 14. “Even if the greenery on the façade still has to grow, the multi-storey parking lot is already a shining eye-catcher in Dortmund’s cityscape, right on the B1,” says Schrage. In addition to members of the KVWL construction committee, representatives of the contractors also attended the handover of the keys. Schrage thanked everyone involved on behalf of the Board of Directors and the KVWL Assembly of Representatives.
Kerstin Fritz, Chairwoman of the KVWL Building Committee, cut the red ribbon at the opening ceremony. From July, the eleven-metre-high multi-storey parking lot in Dortmund’s city center on the corner of Westfalendamm and Jülicher Straße will offer KVWL employees 167 parking spaces, 17 of which are barrier-free, spread over 3,900 square meters of floor space and four and a half storeys. “As soon as the photovoltaic system is installed, we will be able to supply ten charging stations for electric vehicles even more sustainably with self-produced green electricity,” explained Schrage. The construction also has positive consequences for local residents: The new parking garage will provide noticeable relief for the surrounding streets in the vicinity of the medical center.
A total of around 200 tons of steel and around 500 cubic meters of concrete were used within a year. “Nevertheless, the special focus is on the wooden façade and the elements of sustainability,” emphasized Schrage. In view of the climate crisis, the future large-scale greening of the exterior façade will improve the surrounding microclimate: evaporation from the plants draws heat from the immediate surroundings. This lowers the air temperature around the parking garage – this effect is particularly beneficial in urban areas. Software-supported parking space management rounds off the picture of a modern, sustainable and efficient parking garage.
