Westerburg School Center
Building a new center - our competition entry
The aim of the design competition in Westerburg was to develop a communal center for the surrounding schools, including a 3-court sports hall, a teaching pool, a central canteen and a library.
Four single-storey buildings arranged around a partially roofed center form the basic concept of the competition entry. With the basic idea of creating sports facilities as well as communication and meeting places, the buildings arranged around it form a central square that connects all the buildings. The result is a compact building complex with short access routes, which is barrier-free and at ground level thanks to its single-storey design.
The entrances to the library’s reading room and the canteen’s dining room are oriented towards the central open space, making it easier to find your way around and allowing the central outdoor area to be used as an extension of the canteen.
The different building uses are already recognizable from the outside due to their different heights, as the main uses are located in higher parts of the building and secondary uses in lower parts.
Our design provides for a sustainable and resource-conserving choice of materials with detachable connections for easier revision. The building is supported by a timber frame construction which, thanks to a high degree of prefabrication, enables economical construction and at the same time ensures a significant reduction in theCO2 footprint. The timber construction also divides the façade into horizontal bands and vertical pilaster strips and is thus a design-defining component of our building design.
To improve the microclimate and biodiversity, all roof surfaces of the building design will be greened. In addition, the rainwater runoff can be throttled so that it can then be collected in a cistern as irrigation water. In addition to the greenery, a PV system is planned on the roof area to cover electricity requirements.
