BVB: Hall for the footbonaut

World’s first Footbonaut

The Footbonaut is an analysis and training tool that uses optoelectronics to both objectively measure the speed of action and passing precision of athletes and train them in a time-efficient manner. The player stands on a playing field measuring approx. 14×14 m, which is surrounded on the sides by goal wall constructions and eight controllable ball throwing machines. The balls are freely programmable in terms of ball speed (up to 120 km/h), delay time (reaction), spin (spin) and pass height (flat pass to header).

When the signal sounds, the footballer must turn in the corresponding direction at lightning speed. The passed ball must then be received in a controlled manner and shot into one of the 72 fields that suddenly light up red, with each action recorded by light barriers and a subsequent statistical evaluation.

Another function of the Footbonaut: Recovered players can be brought back to training more quickly.

Like all the other buildings on the BVB training ground, the Footbonauten hall was designed by SHA Scheffler Helbich Architekten. In addition to the actual hall space with the Footbonauten, the building contains all the service functions required for the use of the Footbonauten: Lounge areas with their own kitchen, evaluation rooms and changing areas.

Like the existing buildings, the hall is clad with the characteristic wooden façade, which creates an optimal microclimate inside the hall thanks to the rear-ventilated slats. At the same time, the renewable raw material wood contributes to sustainability and responds architecturally to the natural outdoor space of the training center.
