The PhoenixWERK: new work in Dortmund
"We were impressed by the characterful location right from the start"
On the former PHOENIX West steelworks site, the first two components of a future-oriented office ensemble have been completed on an area of around 9,000 m². With its pointed and clear focus on the historic blast furnace and the Warsteiner Music Hall, it is a reminiscence of the industrial culture of the Ruhr area: the PhoenixWERK – planned, realized and now occupied by SHA Scheffler Helbich Architekten. It thus belongs to the “founding generation” of a number of companies in the still young innovation location in the south of Dortmund.
“We are thrilled and proud to be able to work for our clients from here every day,” says Christoph Helbich, Managing Partner of SHA. Here at PHOENIX West in the Hörde district, the two previous Dortmund locations of the architecture firm have now been brought together. “The property and the characterful location convinced us right from the start,” enthuses Christoph Helbich. SHA, together with Remira, the company that built the second part of the building, took the initiative for the project by looking for a new company headquarters. It is the perfect environment for this traditional family business, which has grown enormously in recent years thanks to its specialization.
From PHOENIX West, SHA will expand its activities even further in the coming years and support its clients throughout Germany as a strong partner and “caretaker from A-Z” in all project phases.
In the long term, three further buildings will be constructed on the site – including a parking garage by the end of the year – which will complete the quarter in line with demand. The remaining two components can still be acquired by investors. “The whole thing is based on a campus idea,” explains Christoph Helbich. The parking garage guarantees a car-free environment on the site and, together with the green inner courtyard, a high quality of stay for all tenants. With its clinker brick façade, the parking garage harmoniously continues the language of the PhoenixWERK.

The new building will create a new spatial edge to Phoenixplatz and thus strengthen it as the striking center of the quarter against a historical backdrop.
Framed by the Warsteiner Music Hall, Schalthaus 101 and the PhoenixWERK, the square has become a lively meeting place not only during cultural events.
The next construction phases will provide space for over 250 employees in the future. The generous window fronts allow a light-flooded room layout for contemporary offices: New ways of working are not just a buzzword here, but an everyday reality. Whether individual or open-plan offices, everything is possible at PhoenixWERK. Retreats are just as possible as teamwork in the communicative communal zones. The internal references to the surrounding existing buildings are consistent throughout. All entrances are inviting and barrier-free and offer direct access to the shared inner courtyard in the long term. Sustainable and resource-conserving construction methods, state-of-the-art technology and high-quality materials are key components of the concept, which can respond to the individual wishes and requirements of tenants and investors. In addition, economic and ecological operation is particularly important.
