hagebau logistics site in Herten reopened after major fire

Rapid planning by SHA

Last week, hagebau Logistik celebrated the reopening of its West site in Herten, North Rhine-Westphalia. The warehouses were almost completely destroyed in a major fire in March 2020. Our architectural firm SHA Scheffler Helbich Architekten was responsible for the rapid redesign. The work was carried out by the construction company Brüninghoff.

After the fire disaster on March 1, 2020, hagebau Logistik decided to rebuild the halls in Herten as quickly as possible. As one of six warehouse locations in Germany, Herten plays an important role in hagebau’s logistics strategy. The new building was therefore used to expand the burnt-down halls from 7,760 square meters to 13,500 square meters. There are now also three fire compartments. In addition, a modern photovoltaic system, which supplies the electric forklifts at the site with electricity, was installed to ensure energy efficiency. With the covered outdoor areas, a total of 28,000 square meters of the 86,000 square meters of company premises are now available.

“After the fire, it was important to quickly redesign the building to minimize operational downtime,” says Dipl.-Ing. architect Marcel Schlegel, who was in charge of the project for SHA Scheffler Helbich Architekten.

At the symbolic handover of the keys – less than two years after the fire – he was on site together with SHA Managing Director Christoph Helbich and Site Manager Mathias Haak to wish everyone involved every success for the future of the site. We expect to be able to supply DIY stores throughout the Ruhr region from here again from March.

After the ground-breaking ceremony in April 2021, the construction phase lasted just nine months until the current reopening on January 12, 2022. All 40 Herten employees, who had been kept on at other hagebau logistics locations in the meantime, have now been able to return to their jobs.

“With the rapid reopening, we are sending out a clear signal – for the Herten location, for our employees here on site and for the logistics of hagebau as a whole,” said a delighted Gerritt Höppner-Tietz, Managing Director of hagebau Logistik.
