Architectural competition for new secondary school building in Düsseldorf: 1st prize for SHA

Planning partnership with GINA Barcelona Architects

Great joy at SHA Scheffler Helbich Architekten: Together with GINA Barcelona Architects from Spain, our planning office has been awarded 1st prize in the architectural competition for the planned new building of the “Heinzelmännchenweg Municipal High School” in Düsseldorf-Grafental.

A jury with representatives from politics, administration and the professional world reviewed the 15 submitted designs and awarded prizes to two other offices in addition to the planning consortium from SHA and GINA. The four-form grammar school with a three-court sports hall will be built on the edge of the Düsseldorf-Grafental residential area, which is still under construction. Negotiations for the planning contracts will now begin.

“This is a great award for our work,” says Marc Horstmeier, authorized signatory at SHA and in charge of our team’s participation in the competition: “Congratulations to the winning offices in Düsseldorf and Cologne!” The jury awarded 2nd prize to the entries of Wollenweber Architektur from Düsseldorf and mvm+starke architekten from the cathedral city. Freiraumplus from Krefeld and GREENBOX Landschaftsarchitekten from Cologne are responsible for the open space design of these two designs.

In the negotiations on the planning contracts, it is now necessary to answer individual questions more precisely and to clarify critical points in terms of planning.

City Director Burkhard Hintzsche explains: “The complexity of the construction project presented major challenges. It is impressive how the architectural firms have dealt with this and what great and yet different designs there are to choose from. I look forward to further discussions and planning and am certain that with the secondary school on Heinzelmännchenweg we will create a modern school location that meets all requirements – innovative education, nature conservation, integration of living and learning.”

Architectural competition of the state capital Düsseldorf

The city of Düsseldorf is facing immense challenges in the face of growing pupil numbers, which also offer an opportunity for the school landscape. Numerous schools are being renovated, extended or newly built.

For this reason, the state capital is planning to build the “Heinzelmännchenweg municipal grammar school” in Grafental. The aim is to be able to offer an appropriate range of educational facilities with sports and play areas in the borough. The new building is part of the package of school organization measures approved by the council.

Due to the complexity of the task – among other things, the plot is relatively small and the building is also to serve as noise protection from the railroad line – the city decided to hold an architectural competition.
