University of Kassel

Expansion of the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences

The new building for the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Kassel is made up of two different building typologies, which are arranged on top of each other according to their use. Laboratory units are planned for the lower floors, whereas the upper building typology contains office space. A meandering building base running in a north-south direction blends into the urban environment. Inner courtyards with a more private character and public squares will be created. In addition, the building runs alongside an existing park and thus reacts to the existing topography. Three ring-shaped structures are mounted on the linear base.

set up. They have a lower building depth than the plinth below, creating usable roof areas. On the one hand, this is used for extensive roof greening. On the other hand, a promenade will be created here, via which all other parts of the building can be reached. The existing park will also be connected to the elevated promenade by means of a staircase. Vertical access between the laboratory and office levels is provided by several access cores. A spacious, multi-storey hall with a sculptural staircase serves as the main vertical access route and promotes orientation and communication within the building.

On the first floor, several staircases link the inner courtyards and connect them to the urban spaces and the adjacent park. The horizontal separation of the two building typologies is also made visible in the form of the construction. While the base storeys are made of reinforced concrete, the upper office floors are designed as a timber construction. Part of the power supply is secured by a PV system on the roof. In addition, the use of wood for the primary construction of the office areas, combined with energy-efficient building technology and an intelligent façade system, contributes to sustainable architecture.
