BVB: Successful expansion of the training ground

Proximity to the sporting action

SHA Scheffler Helbich Architekten and BVB – in close cooperation with DSW21, this is a joint success story that began in 2005. At that time, the new training ground of the Bundesliga soccer team was built in the Brackel district in time for the 2006 World Cup according to SHA’s plans. Since then, the functional flows on the entire site have been optimized again and again. As a result, ultra-modern functional buildings and the best possible training facilities for the professionals, the amateurs and the ambitious youth section have gradually been created in line with demand.

“Sports office”: short distances

The sixth construction phase was completed in summer 2020. The administration now has more space in the new “Sports Office”. The sports departments – coaches, scouting and youth development – are now housed in the immediate vicinity of the training pitches. Short distances and fast coordination processes for sporting success guaranteed! The previous premises on Rheinlanddamm no longer met the increased space requirements.

The sporting management with BVB managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke, sports director Michael Zorc and Sebastian Kehl, head of the professional players’ department, also move into representative offices in the head office. A press room is integrated into the first floor, where press conferences will be held from the 2020/21 season. Possible future extensions to the three-storey office and administration building have been considered from the outset. The BVB training ground could be converted even further.

Multifunctional building for visitors and journalists

Just a few meters from the “Sports Office”, the new multifunctional building is now the first port of call for all visitors to the site. Guests are received here at the gate entrance in order to meet the increased security requirements. Media representatives will also find perfect conditions for their job here with a large workspace. Another highlight is the spacious roof terrace, from which journalists can observe the training from an almost bird’s eye view.

The big picture

Together with the youth training center, the youth and amateur center and the hall for the Footbonauts, the new buildings form a harmonious whole on the training ground. The sports buildings feature larch wood slatted façades, giving them a light and calm appearance, while the administration building and the youth training center have solid facing brick façades. The energy center is located at the edge of the area and out of sight. A combined heat and power plant ensures that the training grounds generate their own sustainable heat.

The parking space in the sixth construction phase has also been expanded in line with the higher volume of employees due to the conversion of the training grounds.
