When the ideas for the PhoenixWERK office ensemble began to take shape, it became clear relatively quickly that the first floor would be used for catering outlets. After all, the location is ideal, as the offices guarantee high user frequency during the day. In the evenings and at weekends, the surrounding event locations – Phoenix des Lumières and Schalthaus 101 – liven up the area around Phoenixplatz.
The planning was designed from the outset to allow two independent operators to use the different rooms and two separate kitchens on the first floor for their concept; for example, as a trendy bar, cozy bistro or hip café on one side and a modern restaurant on the other.
The restaurant impresses with its large glass façade on the west side, which allows guests to enjoy an unobstructed view of the historic blast furnace on the old PHOENIX West steelworks site while dining in comfort. The mullion and transom façade with lots of glass on the south and north sides allows views between Phoenixplatz and the future inner courtyard and conveys openness.
The bistro area is ideal for smaller businesses. The kitchen installed there is designed for a smaller gastronomic concept, while the restaurant kitchen offers significantly more space. It includes ancillary rooms in the basement with storage space and changing rooms for employees.
The interior walls in both restaurants are also partially clinkered. In this way, the façade material of the PhoenixWERK and the charm of the surrounding industrial culture have been successfully transferred to the guest rooms. The further design of the interior by the operators is reminiscent in many details of the heyday of steel production in Dortmund. Inside & outside go hand in hand and create an incomparable, cultural-historical ambience for visitors.
In future, the outdoor catering area will be located on the south side of PhoenixWERK and thus in the shared inner courtyard. This is in the process of being created. The restaurant also has an outdoor terrace on the west side, which in turn offers a special ambience with a view of the gutted blast furnace. The north side of the restaurants, on the other hand, is located directly on Phoenixplatz with a view of the neighboring event locations. It is already clear that the open space will be ideal for sociable groups to meet and chat in the fresh air.
